Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

The Cape of Good Hope is world-famous as the southwesternmost point of the African continent and a pivotal landmark in maritime history. In 1488, Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias became the first European to round the cape, opening the direct sea route to India and East Asia. It is also famous for its dramatic sea cliffs, rich fynbos flora, shipwreck history, and unique wildlife inside Table Mountain National Park.

Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope are two neighboring promontories within the same SANParks reserve, separated by 2.3 km. Cape Point features the steep 238m cliff, the historic Old Lighthouse, and the Flying Dutchman Funicular. The Cape of Good Hope is the lower rocky shoreline section where the famous wooden marker sign stands.

Scientifically, the Indian and Atlantic Oceans officially meet at Cape Agulhas, located 150 km to the southeast. However, the Cape Peninsula is where the cold Benguela current from the Atlantic meets the warmer Agulhas current from the Indian Ocean, creating dramatic marine dynamics, weather shifts, and rich marine biodiversity.

While individual wild penguins occasionally swim along the Cape of Good Hope beaches, the main African Penguin colony is located at Boulders Beach in Simon's Town, just 21 km (20 minutes drive) north of the Cape of Good Hope gate. Most day tours combine both attractions.
